A 21-year-old gets ready to open a new boys’ school in Albany, Georgia, News WALB 10 reports.
King Randall is a youth leader in Albany who started The “X” for boys two years ago, when he was just 19, to teach other young men skills and increase literacy rates.
“[We were] By organizing different workshops to teach young men how to do different jobs, we also organize a book club and teach them to read because 93 per cent of the children I am in contact with cannot read. But now we have an 86% reading comprehension rate, ”said Randall.
The group received huge support, even being invited to the White House. Randall said Albany’s troubled young men were only looking for outlets, access and opportunities; he hopes to expand his program by giving men physical space as well.
“[I want to give] a space where they are surrounded by a lot of other young men and other men who are trying to shape you and train you. I have had children who came to find me at my house and who came knocking and asking to join The “X” for Boys. I’ve had kids who messaged me on Instagram, gang members; you name it, ”he said.
With the success of the program, Randall began working to make his initial dream of opening a school a reality. He enlisted the help of the Dougherty County school system to bring his vision to life.
“I called the superintendent and asked him if he had any school buildings that they weren’t afraid to get rid of, and he said, ‘Well, we have three buildings on the block ready to be demolished’ . was like, ” Oh really? ” So I went to visit one of them, and it’s in great shape. Sure it needs a little bit of attention, but they just stopped using it maybe about two years ago, ”Randall mentioned.
Today, the 21-year-old is looking to open his school, turning the old Isabella School in Albany into a New Life prep school for boys. He plans to open the boys’ boarding school, focusing on rigorous studies and trades, including welding and auto repair and the science of family, manhood and gun training. Its mission is to empower local boys to become well-rounded individuals. He has already received a lot of support, including a donation of 10,000 masks from Ford Motor Company for his students.
Randall took to social media to share his excitement.
“Black history is still being created! I’m 21, buying a school and opening a boarding school for young men in my community! First of its kind where we live! What can’t we do? Who’s going to hold us back? ”He captioned photos of the campus.
