During their recent performance at an all-boys school, K-pop girl group Aespa were caught off guard when students rushed onto the stage and took photos with them, some of which were later posted online with sexual comments.
Coming on the heels of historical performance on the main stage of Coachella, Aespa was invited to perform on Monday at Kyungbock High School in Seoul during a school festival. The high school is the alma mater of Lee Soo-man, head of Aespa’s SM Entertainment label. According to tradition, many new SM bands performed at the school.
During their performance, four boys came on stage uninvited and asked the band for selfies, to which the band complied.
Some Netizens claimed that Aespa member Ningning tried to stop some students from taking selfies.
Some students also reportedly attempted to reach out and touch the limbs, prompting a teacher to warn: “You will be reported for sexual harassment if you touch them”. Other Internet users have claimed several the students tried to hold the band members’ hands to initiate skinship while taking the selfies.
One of the four boys who later skipped the stage would have posted the group photo on his social media, writing, “I did everything except touch them. Other captions of photos taken at the school event included “My girlfriends are here lol their bodies are fucking banging’ and ‘sex’.
The hashtag “Keep Aespa safe” is trending on social media, with many netizens outraged by the incident and criticizing SM for failing to provide adequate security after artists were further harassed and hurt as ‘they were leaving. Many netizens pointed out that the lone female staff member was trying to protect the members.
A video of many students rushing after Aespa has garnered over 200,000 views.
The school administration issued a letter of apology which has since been taken down after the criticism. He read:
“Today, the 101st anniversary ceremony, organized by the Kyungbock High School Alumni Association, was held in the school’s main auditorium. The idol group aespa were invited to the ceremony to However, after the event, media reports inadvertently damaged the reputation of SM Entertainment and aespa, and we sincerely apologize.
However, following a survey of students on campus after media reports, it was found that several foreigners who were not Kyungbock students visited the event, but did not attend. were not allowed to enter for security reasons. It can be inferred that due to this incident malicious posts which were never true were posted on some social media.
Nevertheless, as a result, we again apologize for damaging the reputation of SM Entertainment and aespa with today’s event.
