Berks’ puppy walks the runway at New York Fashion Week | Top Stories

EXETER TWP., Pa. — Forget the show — this was Penny the Dog’s walk during New York Fashion Week just days ago.

“It was a proud moment for me,” Penny owner Preety Kaur said.

Kaur, from Exeter Township, talks about when her Maltipoo, Penny, made her way down the runway for designer Anthony Rubio’s show.

“There were photographers taking pictures of her backstage, and then eventually I handed her over to the model she was assigned to, and the model carried her down the runway,” Kaur said.

Preety Kaur, from Exeter Township, said Penny helps out at the Berks County Children’s Alliance Center when she isn’t walking the track.

Kaur says the pinch moment started out as a pipe dream. She saw a casting call for canine couture models earlier this year and sent Penny’s photo and resume.

“I was like, ‘It doesn’t hurt to try, you never know,’ Kaur said. “I mean, I’m from Berks County. It’s a long shot, but let’s try.”

Penny got the call and the job.

“I literally jumped up and down,” Kaur said. “I didn’t think it was real at first, but I was so excited.”

So they went to New York and Penny modeled in Rubio’s show in February. Fast forward seven months, and she got the call again. On September 11, Penny walked for her second Rubio show.

“Surreal,” Kaur said. “I couldn’t believe coming from a small town, we made it to the Big Apple.”

When she’s not strutting around in her furry fashion, Penny helps out locally. She is a certified therapy dog and volunteer at the Berks County Children’s Alliance Center.

“I would like her to stay very involved in our community,” Kaur said.

But the dog’s owner says that at the age of one, Penny’s modeling career is just beginning.

“We would really like to continue with New York Fashion Week,” Kaur said. “They actually have LA Fashion Week, too.”
