Boys School HS Rugby Week 11 Standings

It was a difficult classification to do.

It was mostly tough because a few Top 10 teams lost, but it wasn’t like other teams in the 12-20 range had major wins to raise their hands.

In the end, we have two teams jumping into the Top 10 and another going up 22 spots to 11th. But we have to say that we are not completely convinced by these rankings. Someone has to be ranked No. 8, we’re just not convinced it’s Cardinal Gibbons. Greenwich enter the Top 10 after a narrow loss (something we’ve done before but it’s a fine line in a team’s CV). They lost by try to Aspetuck, and Aspetuck is very strong. So, OK, they have to be there for now, but Greenwich will have to back it up. Conestoga’s two-point loss to Gregory the Great sends them up dramatically, but that’s okay. We thought they would do well enough to move up five or 10 spots either way, win or lose. At No 11 the heights can be a little dizzying but, again, if they can back it up, that’s good for them.

St. Thomas is another team that is perhaps a little too highly ranked. It will be interesting to see Strake Jesuit vs. St. Pius X, the team St. Thomas just beat, as a cross-reference result this coming weekend.

Jesuit New Orleans discovered what happens when most of your ranking is based on in-state results. Yes, they had two impressive wins against teams from Texas, but those teams also ran into problems. We were waiting for Xavier to win big on Pelham (didn’t happen) and for Penn to get a result on St. Xavier (snowy). We thought if Strake Jesuit beat West Houston we could bring them up and keep Jesuit NOLA a little higher. No. (An aside – we are fully aware that West Houston is on probation and will not be playing in the Texas playoffs. As a result, some teams are selecting for these games. We can’t control any of this, but it probably explains why Strake dropped only three places after the loss.)

We also drop some teams, all because we haven’t seen them play and so many other teams are playing that we can’t just sit and wait. What brings them (or whoever) back? To play rugby.

On the program this weekend: Illinois starts. Moeller plays St. Xavier, Strake plays Pius (as we mentioned), Aspetuck is at Staples, St. Joe’s plays Georgetown Prep and… Herriman plays United (!).
