If boy bands were heavy, they might sound like Beartooth’s new song, “Riptide.” The group’s song was inspired by the Backstreet Boys, Ariana Grande, One Direction and BTS. Watch Beartooth’s music video for their new song “Riptide” below.

The song is very different from Beartooth’s last album Below, which although lead singer Caleb Shomo loves the record and told NME “it was important to my life and my career”, he also describes it as “absolutely the most depressing and saddest job I’ve ever had. never done”. The leader says he “wanted to do something to get [him] out of this headspace. [He] I wanted to do something that’s really fun, that makes you happy and isn’t really sad.”

NME reports that “Shomo went back and revisited much of the music he loved growing up, including One Direction, N*SYNC and Backstreet Boys.” The musician also listed Ariana Grande and BTS to capture their “great pop vibes.”

“Riptide” was created to “catch people off guard” and show people that he has another side “other than just being miserable and sad all the time,” Shomo says. Although he was nervous about releasing music that sounded so different “If I weren’t nervous, I would know this is not the right song to release. It’s really important for the direction Beartooth is taking.”

Shomo explains that their new music is very different because, “It’s me realizing there’s a lot of things I could do to help myself feel better and feel happier than I ever did. just didn’t. I still let that negativity out, but I’m now striving to be happier rather than letting go or letting my emotions run wild.”

“I basically did Bearthtooth’s version of a dance song,” Shomo says. You can listen to the song here and watch the music video for “Riptide” below.

“Riptide” lyrics by Beartooth

Riptide, it’s a counter-current
Riptide, it’s a counter-current

finally frozen
More emotion
I started to slip away now it’s all numb
Dive into the deep end
Stuck and I can’t swim
So out of breath I know I don’t have long

Yeah that’s way too much, just give me the rush
Yeah that’s way too much, just give me the rush

I’m done explaining my pain
It’s way too much
I want to feel the euphoria
Give me the rush
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The riptide trying to drown me
Full of excuses for too long
I don’t wanna sing another hopeless song
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The countercurrent
It’s a counter-current

Riptide, it’s a counter-current
Riptide, it’s a counter-current

I’m so ashamed of
My vicious problems
keep the worst of me to myself
It’s overwhelming
never say
The ones I love I need to find help

Yeah that’s way too much, just give me the rush
Yeah it’s way too much

I’m done explaining my pain
It’s way too much
I want to feel the euphoria
Give me the rush
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The riptide trying to drown me
Full of excuses for too long
I don’t wanna sing another hopeless song
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The countercurrent
It’s a counter-current

I do not want to die
I guess I have to let go
I do not want to die
I guess I have to let go

I’m done explaining my pain
It’s way too much
I want to feel the euphoria
Give me the rush
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The riptide, yeah
I’m done explaining my pain
It’s way too much
I want to feel the euphoria
Give me the rush
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The riptide trying to drown me
Full of excuses for too long
I don’t wanna sing another hopeless song
‘Cause it’s the last time I romance
The countercurrent
It’s a counter-current

Riptide, it’s a counter-current
Riptide, it’s a counter-current
