MYSTERY surrounds the death of a man after a bloody butcher knife and a can of gasoline were found near his body in an apartment.

Emergency crews responded to west Phoenix on April 2 and discovered a fire at the premises that 32-year-old Ishmael Williams was apparently trying to put out.

After the flames were extinguished, an unidentified 33-year-old man was found inside the apartment “with clear signs of trauma”.

Court documents say the victim had a large cut on his neck and may have been set on fire.

Williams, who lived with the victim, told police they were arguing over rent and how dirty the apartment was.

Williams said he went to his room and closed the door. He said he then heard loud noises coming from his roommate’s room and tried to open the door, but it was locked.

“Ishmael forced his way into the bedroom,” court documents said.

“When the door was opened, Ishmael said the victim was standing inside the room engulfed in flames.”

The man told police he ran outside for help before going to the kitchen to fill a bucket of water and pour it over his roommate to put out the fire.

“Ishmael [sic] told investigators he did not touch the victim, however, blood [was] discovered on his hands, his calves, his feet. Blood splatters were found on a pair of basketball shorts that Ishmael was wearing,” court doctors said.

A bloody butcher knife was found in the victim’s bedroom, police said, along with a can of gasoline.

Williams denies all allegations made against him in connection with the death inquest.

“The evidence at the scene, along with the interviews conducted, led detectives to arrest Mr. Williams,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Vincent Cole said.

Williams is charged with homicide. He was jailed and is being held on $1 million bail.
